Honoring Nurses During National Nurses Week: Acts of Gratitude from Alex’s Team Foundation

At Alex’s Team Foundation, we believe nurses are the heart of pediatric cancer care. Every day, they stand alongside patients and families, offering not just expert medical care but also compassion, strength, and comfort during the most difficult moments.

This National Nurses Week, Alex’s Team Foundation was proud to honor and thank these incredible caregivers with thoughtful gestures of appreciation both here in Boston and beyond.

In Boston, Alex’s Team Foundation partnered with Energize to treat the dedicated nurses on the pediatric oncology wing at Boston Children’s Hospital to over 200 acai bowls. These refreshing and nourishing treats offered a small but meaningful gesture of appreciation to the nurses who work tirelessly to care for young patients and their families.

We are especially grateful to Ryan Wilson, President of Wilson Group, our Vice President Lucas McGary and his family, and Chairman of the Board and Alex’s mom, Patti Miliotis, who joined us in person to help deliver these tokens of gratitude. Their support helped make these special moments possible.

Throughout the week, Boston Children’s Hospital also organized a variety of activities which Alex’s Team supported to celebrate their incredible nursing team, including additional food deliveries, mini wellness retreats, games, and bake-offs.

Supporting Riley Hospital for Children

Alex’s Team also extended our appreciation to the nurses at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis by sponsoring a coffee cart for the nursing staff throughout the week. In addition, we supported the hospital’s Nursing Excellence Awards Program, which kicked off National Nurses Week by recognizing the extraordinary commitment, skill, and compassion of Riley’s nursing team.

Highlighting the Nurses in our Community

For families like the Johnsons, the impact of nurses is deeply personal. Lisa Johnson, NP, a nurse practitioner at Boston Children’s Hospital and mother whose son Henry was treated there, shared:

“Having worked as a nurse in pediatric oncology for 10 years, I knew Henry being diagnosed with cancer was a possibility. However, I certainly never thought it would actually happen. Having my son admitted to the floor I worked on, and being treated by my colleagues, was a surreal experience to say the least—but also a comforting one. I knew he was receiving the best possible care from some of the smartest and most caring people out there. They supported me and helped educate my family during the hardest experience of our lives. Their expert care is the reason Henry is cancer free. We are forever grateful for the care we received and for the generosity of Alex’s Team—as their support makes stories like Henry’s possible.”

Lisa’s story was also featured in The Boston Globe as part of a special series highlighting nurses nominated by someone in the community. She was nominated by her husband, who shared that she is dedicated to helping everyone she encounters, whether it’s her own son or a patient on the oncology floor.

Alex’s Team Foundation’s commitment to nurses goes beyond National Nurses Week. We are proud to support Boston Children’s Hospital’s Global Nursing Fellowship, an innovative program working to strengthen pediatric nursing leadership and education around the world. The program is led by Lisa Morrissey, Senior Director of Nursing and Patient Services on the Hematology, Oncology, and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant team, who was also one of Alex’s own nurses. This initiative is helping to transform how care is delivered to children and families globally, and we are honored to continue supporting its growth.

Thank You, Nurses

From Boston to Indianapolis and beyond, Alex’s Team Foundation is proud to stand behind the nurses who make a world of difference every day. Whether it’s through a cup of coffee, an acai bowl, or long-term investments in nursing education, our mission remains clear: to honor those who care for kids with cancer and ensure they have the resources, support, and recognition they deserve.
